Louise Hogg

Louise Hogg - born 1876

Louise Hogg b.1876 d.15 March 1949, m. Percy Cotterell Bytheway 27 Sept 1897

Children:
Ernest Bytheway b. 1901
William Henry Bytheway b. 25 March 1906
Jack Cecil Bytheway b. 30 April 1902
Percy Fereday Bytheway b. 25 March 1906
Margaret Gertrude Bytheway b. 20 April 1898

Youngest daughter of Margaret Wilson and John Hogg. She was an exceptionally gifted teenage elocutionist and became the protege of her teacher, Harrower of Glasgow. This meant certain restrictions and priviledges in the choice of readings and concert engagements and she headed rapidly to becoming a noted tragedienne as she 'did' the Glasgow halls, reciting before spell-bound audiences receiving good press notices. Inevitably in those days this led to priviledged invitations to County Houses and to prospects of a Royal Command Performance.
Sir Harry Lauder was anxious for her to tour with him as elocutionist or skirt dancer, (is not recorded) but, at the age of nineteen she met her husband-to-be and decided to marry.
Any desire or ambition to be an artiste was swept away and the next twenty years were spent in raising a family. Her repertoire of Shakespear, her readings too - Marmion, the battle of Waterloo, Jimmy Douglas, Love in a Balloon, Jock Shaw on fishing, McAlisters visit to the Queen, Baillie Nicol Jarvie and Jeanie Deans became fireside and bedtime stories for her children and young folk. This outlet for her art was insufficient compensation for her dramatic, sensitive nature and added to frustration at being unable to finance dreamt of careers for her family while the incompatibility which had grown up between herself and her husband following the stresses and strains of the 1914-18 war years broke her health and she died in hospital.
It is regrettable she did not live to appreciate and be glad in her family's ultimate achievements and their deep gratitude for all her good guidance, loving care and basic Christian upbringing which latterly led to all her four surviving children being converted - Jack at the age of 55 - sanctified and, through the teaching of Jesus Christ, regenerated and reconciled to God by faith and His gifted Holy Spirit.
