This is an image of the last known letter to be sent from John Richard Lorriman to his sister Ellen Lorriman before he was killed in action just 3 days later during World War 1. See below for a transcript.

May 4th 1915
Dear Sister and Brother
I am still here to write a few more lines to you both hoping to find you well as it leaves me at present in the pink of condition so you have no need to bother yourself for I still have a great confidence in myself of pulling through and coming back safe home to you again. So cheer up for there is better days in store for if there a long while in coming they will come. Just ask Joe if he will be as good as to send me a nice little pipe out for we get tons of bacca and cigs out here. So kiss the youngsters for me and tell our little John Willi that I shall expect to see him running about like our Elsie when I come home again. I have had a rough time of it this last two or three days but I have got over it alright. So give my luck to all my old comrades. Tell Joe a pint would go down nice now out here. So I think this is all this time Nell lass so I will now bring my letter to a close with love to all at home.
I beg to remain your loving Brother
Dick.
